Emilian company Poggi Trasmissioni Meccaniche s.p.a., specialized in designing and manufacturing power transmission components, has taken a further step forward for the adoption of stocking solutions that will increase the efficiency of its operational process.

The company from Bologna looks to the future by refining its warehouse with the implementation of a research project in the automation technology, which testifies the far-sightedness that characterizes itself.

In the aftermath of its 60th anniversary, Poggi Trasmissioni Meccaniche s.p.a. embraces new automation systems of Industry 4.0, which renew and improve the management of a  warehouse. This manufacturing company of belt pulleys, right angle gearboxes and other power transmission components, affirms its authentic leadership in this sector, by strengthening its efficiency and its reliability.

A brilliantly reached objective has been the optimization of the warehouse by means of an automation system thanks to which Poggi succeeds in saving 75% of the available materials and stocks. In this way, the surfaces needed for stocking decrease and productivity increases.

Consumption and stock reach the same pattern, thus allowing the elimination of the items stocked in excess and allowing a significant reduction in sourcing costs.

Poggi invests in youth by taking on board Eng. Elisa Bruni and the project contained in her graduation thesis “Correct sizing of a tool store in the mechanical industry: the case of Poggi Trasmissioni Meccaniche s.p.a.”; this is a study that proposes an innovative model, focused on elaborating solutions for optimization. Today, Eng. Bruni is carrying on her research, together with the company, within the team dedicated to the implementation of this process.

The adoption of an automatic warehouse system provided with digital records allows the the information on consumptions to be stored and facilitates the running of procurement as a function of orders, hence in perfect connection to the company’s management system.

Productivity increases by 40% thanks to the reduction of the search time and of the picking time for the over 23,000 item numbers on catalogue. In this way, Poggi can satisfy the requirements of Italian and foreign customers, by running the warehouse in real time and allowing   a return on investments in a short time, through the savings obtained on exceeding material.

After a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data, a direct matching between consumptions and stocks has been achieved. The research has determined that only a segment of the stocks used to be exploited, generating in this way unproductive capital and consequently an amount recorded on the liabilities side of the balance sheet of the company.
A continuous use of some components has been noted and, starting from this fact, a principle of efficiency has been established, in order to have less capital immobilized, thus decreasing as well costs due to obsolescence.

Now it is no longer necessary to keep large structures: Poggi cares about our planet and contributes to reducing the environmental impact even through this strategy, which minimizes waste, besides Poggi adopts an innovative intelligent system that cuts costs in an efficiency chain.

The global effects obtained through this system have been the cutting out of the risk of stock-out, the minimizing of disruptions in the work flow and the quickening of bureaucratic procedures for the picking of items and for procurement.
